Welcome to the York & District Squash League...

We exist to encourage the game of squash at all levels in the York area, and to organise local leagues and tournaments. Our sister organisation runs the women's leagues, with most of the same clubs entering both men's and women's teams.

We also support junior squash, which is actively developed by several of our affiliated clubs.

Kirkbymoorside 2nd Team

Kirkbymoorside 2nd Team

The squash club at Kirkbymoorside is approaching 35 years old and has a recent upturn in fortune so much so that a 2nd team was requested in the York & District League for the current season.

Sadly, it was too late to avoid major disruption and KMS2 has had to be put on hold for a season.  With a squash of 18 players for one team, the situation was difficult for Club Captain John Marsh and John Sugarman, the 2nd team Captain to be.

In a superb effort, John has set about creating friendly fixtures against the current Division 5 teams. Thank you to the teams already having arranged fixtures.  I will be keeping a track of the results on this website with a percentage table of games won.  If Kirkbymoorside are top of the table at the end of the season, it will be a good indicator that they will be at home in Div 4 not Div 5 next season.

1 York RI YD 5 4 68 85
2 University Students 2 2 34 85

The main items of interest were:
– The number of players per team in Division 1 is reduced to four;
– Both Andy (Chair) and myself (Secretary) have stood down. Expressions of interest in these posts gratefully received. The AGM agreed that if we don’t fill the secretaries post, the role will be rotated between clubs. I’ll draw the name of the clubs for the next three years at random 1st August.

First York Open for Stephenson

Matthew Stephenson (Dunnington) defeated Paul Adams 3-1 to win his first York Open title at Clifton Park on 24th February. He had overcome his team-mate Nick Robinson in a tense 3-2 in the semi-final the previous evening, while Paul benefited from an unfortunate cycling injury to Ed Shannon.

In the A Plate, bragging rights in the Clapham household went to Harry, who beat dad and Wigginton team-mate Gus 3-1.

In the B competition, York’s Tom Sewell retained his crown by meeting fellow York player Andy Harris 3-1. Steve Ross won the B Plate, beating Andy South 3-2.

The full draw details are on SportyHQ.

Thomas wins Vets, Robson wins Vintage

York and District Veterans and Vintage Championships 2016/17 held at Wigginton Squash Rackets Club

Congratulations to Marc Thomas (Veteran) & Paul Robson (Vintage) who are the Y & D Champions for 2016/17.

The finals night was a most enjoyable occasion at Wigginton with players from 4 clubs represented. Although a small competition entry , the matches were played, as always, in an excellent spirit with some competitive squash. Hopefully with a little more planning from all Y & D clubs we can better support these competitions in the future. A 16 draw in each competition should be a target for next year!

Needless to say there was nothing left in the locker room when the players went on court for the matches through the week.

20161118_205631The Veterans final was won by Marc Thomas (Railway Institute) who beat Angus Clapham (Wigginton) 3-0 . A high standard of squash which the score does not reflect, Angus was well up in two of the games only for the experienced Marc to claw his way back and pip Angus to the winning post.

20161118_205918The Vintage was won by Paul Robson(York) who beat Nicky Horn(Stillington), the first lady to reach a Vets or Vintage final. Paul has not been playing much team squash this year but did not really put a foot wrong in his 3-0 win over Nicky, who’s racket control and shots are second to none but is obviously struggling with a knee problem. Hopefully an operation later in the year will put her back in full action! Then we (the Lads) are in trouble again!!

The Veterans plate was won by Chris Codrai (Wigginton) who beat Andy Sewell (York) 3-0. The same score line saw Duncan Cook (Stillington/Wigginton) beat Mal Bruce (Wigginton) for the Vintage plate.

Well done to everyone and thanks for making it a very enjoyable social night at Wigginton SRC.

Wigginton win Riley Cup after 35 years!

Thirty five years ago, Mike Riley of Wigginton Squash Club donated a magnificent trophy to the Men’s York and District League as a team handicap trophy & this was soon to be followed by the Ladies Riley Rosebowl.

Needless to say Wigginton men have always failed at the final hurdle and failed to win the trophy in three final appearances. Until now! In fact four clubs that no longer exist have won the Riley Cup..Magnets, South Milford, Oval Ball & St John’s Students before Wigginton SRC!

The final of the Riley Cup was due to be played at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon at York, but Stillington, who’s courts were being refurbished, graciously and very sportingly agreed to play at Wigginton on the Sunday evening to make more of a night of the finals. Wigginton put on food for the main & plate finals and a good night was had by all.

dunnington5Stillington 5th team beat Malton 4th team in the plate final by 20 points.

Stillington 5 V Malton 4 (Plate Final)
P.Coates V R.Harper 15/12, 15/14, 15/9 45 V 34
D.Cook V K. Goddard 15/10, 15/12, 15/9 45 v 31
J.Hartley V M.Hammond 14/15, 14/15, 8/15 36 V 45
F.Howell V T.Moore 15/8, 15/10, 15/11 45 v 29
J.Gill V A.Drabble 15/9, 15/10, 15/8 45 v 27

Stillington 216 points Malton 166 plus 30 handicap = 196

The final was a tense affair, a new 4th team player, Steve Drake for Wigginton, playing as a reserve in his first competitive match got 2, 4 & 9 points against Giles Bilton. Wigginton were on the back foot but then Mackenzie Nichol playing Dominic Pegg conceded 7, 8 & 9 points.

Probably all even stevens at this point in the match but with Tom Howell, Marc Thomas & Anthony Baines at 2,3 & 4 , all of whom have played no 1 for Stillington over the last few seasons it looked a rather gloomy prospect for Wiggy! Was it a slow start by Stillington players or really pumped up Wiggy players…the picture is painted by the side of fence you were on! But Mark Wilson , Nick Clifford & Chris Codrai all won the first of their three games…..in the following games although the legs were weary they all managed to put in very respectable performances.

nickclifford-and-mikerileyIn the Club that night was Mike Riley himself, although he still lives in the village he rarely gets into the Club. He kindly stayed for the presentation as Ian Ball announced that with a 45 point handicap on their score of 161 , Wigginton had beaten Stillington by 12 points!

Mike was obviously, over the moon to present the Trophy to Wigginton after all these years & he himself admitted that even though he set the handicaps for 10 years…his team could never win it !

Wigginton 3 V Stillington 1 (Main Final)
M.Nicholl v D.Pegg 15/7, 15/8, 15/9
M.Wilson V T.Howell 15/12, 4/15, 11/15
N.Clifford V M.Thomas 15/11, 13/15, 11/15
C.Codrai V A.Baines 15/12, 6/15, 8/15
S.Drake V G.Bilton 4/15, 5/15, 9/15

wigginton-3Thanks must go to Ian Ball who organised the tournament this year & together with Rod Erridge and Marc Thomas, assessed the teams and decided on the handicaps.

Have a good squash season in 2016/17.

Nick Clifford
