York Open Champion 2020 receives the Victors Cup from referee Andy Tuck

York Open 2020 Final : Sunday February 16th

Ed Shannon (Dunnington) beat James Sandwith (York)

York Open Finalist James Sandwith, Plate winner Angus Clapham and Plate runner Up Jonathan Perrols receiving the congratulations from referee Andy Tuck.

Ed Shannons regains the York Open Championship title.

After a solid 3-0 win over Stillington’s Tom Howell in the semi final, top seed Ed Shannon went into the final with an intent to be clinical and composed. The final was a repeat of the 2018 edition which saw a spirited comeback from york’s James Sandwith sneak ahead of Ed in the 5th and game and stay clear for the win.

Ed saw good success with the deep forehand forcing a boast whilst pushing up on the tee to cover it with an array of front left options that James couldn’t cover. The semi final for James had been a brute of a long-winded five gamer against Dunnington’s George Pethulis and the match contributed to a slow start for James, Ed pushing out to a seven nil lead before James got going.

A satisfying win for Ed who is based at the Dunnington club, once again the kind tournament hosts.

Ian Ball.
